Work, Creation & Prosperity

Making things, earning a living and contributing value.

To explore livelihood, enterprise, technology and craft as ways of fulfilling needs and contributing to others — and to ask what makes work and wealth meaningful.

Introduction

Most adults spend a large share of their waking hours working. Work can be a source of dignity, skill and contribution, or of exhaustion and alienation. Often it is some of each.

This domain looks at work broadly: paid and unpaid, craft and enterprise, technology and art. It asks practical questions about livelihood alongside deeper questions about prosperity and purpose.

Why this domain matters

  • How we earn a living shapes our time, health, relationships and sense of self.
  • Production and technology choices affect people and ecosystems far beyond the workplace.
  • Prosperity has material and non-material dimensions that are easy to confuse.

Key questions

Questions worth living with.

These are not quiz questions. Return to them over weeks and months; notice how your answers change.

  1. What is enough — for me, my family, my community?

  2. Is my work fulfilling a real need, a manufactured want, or both?

  3. When does technology extend human capacity, and when does it diminish it?

  4. What would responsible production look like in my field?

  5. Can prosperity be shared without being diminished?

How Do We Learn From Experience?

    How Do Institutions Shape Society?

Institutions — the formal rules and informal norms that structure human behaviour — quietly shape almost every part of our lives. Understanding them helps explain why some problems persist despite good intentions.

Practical reflection

A sufficiency inventory

30–40 minutes

  1. List the physical things your household needs to live well: food, shelter, clothing, tools, health care, learning.

  2. For each, estimate roughly what would be sufficient, not maximum.

  3. Compare this with what you currently aim for. Note where they differ.

  4. Reflect on what the difference costs you in time, worry or relationships.
