I received linux CDs

I requested for UBUNTU and KUBUNTU linux from vendor and they just arrived yesterday.

I am planning to install them on a system here and will keep updating about my own experience of using linux.

If you have any idea about both these OS, and potential problem areas before hand it will be useful.

Hi Kumar,

I used Suse linux back in 2000, but its GUI was not that impressive at that time.

In last 6 years it must be improved a lot.
Considering this; I dropped my previous concept of Linux and preparing to embrace Linux with open mind.

Lets see how it goes..

Argument is endless

This is an endless debate topic.

1) For Gaming - Windows platform is the best for now. But this scenario is changing now. I am not sure how much time it will take to overcome windows.

2) Hardware Support - I must say linux hardware support has been very good (better than Windows). This is my personal opinion. You need to make sure you have latest version of Linux to support latest hardwares. In most of the cases i never need CD provided by vendors.

3) GUI & Usability - Windows is ahead of Linux in this segment. But if you compare last 2-3 years, Linux desktop has improved a lot, giving direct competition. Usability has improved a lot - more is yet to come. FC6 promises several good features.

4) Software availability: As of now, you have too many softwares available for linux platform. Installing/Uninstalling has become easier with graphic interface that automatically resolves dependencies in the backend. I use apt-get and yum for updating softwares on my system from command line.

5) Stability: Windows is nowhere Linux in stability. I have not seen any Windows desktop machine working without problem continuously for 60 days. I have been using same desktop Linux (FC1) machine since last 3 years without any re-installs or formatting things.

6) Security: Linux is very much secure - in all respect. Viruses, worms, etc.

7) Major software houses are now porting their age-long tested software linux platform.

Reason for not adopting Linux is several misconceptions. Most common word i hear is "Linux is tough", "Linux is not for me"

Good support from local LUGs is needed to teach people about good things Linux offers. I have been offering live demos and some talks in local LUG meets sometimes back and it really helped.
