The government Thursday said new entrants in the telecom sector cannot sell the promoters' equity within three years of getting the licence.'There shall be a lock-in period for sale of equity of a person whose share capital is 10 percent or more in the UAS (unified access service) licensee company,' the Department of Telecom (DoT) said in a statement.

The Indian mobile industry has now moved out of its hyper growth mode, but it will continue to grow at double-digit rates ... as operators focus on rural parts of the country. The research firm said voice tariffs would fall substantially in 2009 as new operators join the market.

Phone Numbers to have 11 digits from Jan 2010

The Department of Telecommunications (DoT), GoI plans to increase the digits for both fixed-line and mobile phone numbers to 11. The implementation for mobile phones would be as early as January, 2010. DoT had unveiled a 30-year numbering plan in 2003, but it is likely that it will run out of numbers by August 2009. This has force the authority to review its policy and come up with a revised long-term strategy.
