Testing framework in ruby

I would like to present another case study of the work that I've done for testing on ruby for an MNC client of mine. I won't be disclosing the project details, you all can understand why, but I'll try to explain the different challenges that i along with the team working on the project faced & how we overcome it. So lets start.

One of my client (security product based company) has their product on linux platform. The frontend is web app & can be accessed by using browser & entire system can be configured, monitored & managed using it. Now this was a very big task to automate the testing of the product, as they have 3 product lines & every product has their own settings etc.

For an IT organization, developing a software system that meets the business needs of clients, is always a challenge. The company needs to ensure that the software system that gets delivered to their clients is free from bugs or defects and achieves the demands as per client requirements. But this can only be ensured by following rigorous software testing and quality assurance procedures.

Software testing is a process without which the Software Development Life Cycle (SDLC) stands incomplete. It is the process that identifies the correctness, completeness and quality of the software developed during the SDLC process. Software bugs and improperly tested codes cost millions in damages and millions more in time and money to fix the defect. Organizations try to develop software applications that should act in a way that cause the least amount of surprises to the user. In short they should be bug free. New paradigms of software testing are being adopted and used in the process of software development.

"Profile of a successful tester is different from that of a successful developer and youngsters are not aware of the importance what a software tester has," said Anant R Koppar, chairman and CEO of KTwo Technologies Solutions delivering a keynote on the topic "Resourcing Challenges in Testing Industry".

Koppar was addressing around 150 software testers at the STEP Auto 2007 - International Conference on Software Test Engineering, Process and Automation organized by ISQT.

"Indian market for testing industry is estimated to be around USD 0.8 to 1 billion in 2007 and the latest survey says that we have a short fall of 15,000 testing professionals and another 25,000 software testers are required in the coming years," he said.

"There’s a need for clearing the misconception in the minds of young graduates who often opt for software development as a career instead of software testing. We have to create an awareness at the college-level itself with respect to opting software testing as a career,” he added.

"The objective of having such events is to propagate the message that testing is one of the major business verticals in the Indian market and is one of the major sources of revenue for India," Koppar said.

He also felt that opting a career as software tester is both creative and lucrative, and felt that the profile of software a tester speaks more than that of a software developer. “The demand for testers is high compared to developers.”

The three-day conference will have key speakers from well-known companies addressing different topics.

DEPLOYING NEW TECHNOLOGY is a risk for any company, so it's somewhat surprising that many don't bother to independently test the kit they're about to run their busineses on.
