Downfall of Orkut

Now orkut is under pressure, its alexa rank is decreasing. Competitor social networking sites are taking lead from orkut. Orkut has lost its position in alexa ranking. It is now behind other giants like myspace, facebook, hi5. Above all, the possible Microsoft-Yahoo Combo will create havoc inside orkut. Why this is happening? Will orkut die? Let’s discuss this.

radiusIM, the next social IM

About radiusIM
What is radiusIM?
radiusIM is Social IM. It’s the only website that shows you where your friends are hanging out and lets you surf for other people based on location. It supports all the major networks: MSN, AIM/ICQ, Yahoo, and GTalk/Jabber. And you can use radiusIM from anywhere because there are no downloads.

The story
We first became addicted to IM in school and have been online pretty much non stop since. We always thought IM could be more fun and more social — especially if we could see where people were hanging out. So, last year we started kicking around ideas for how we could add location and social features to IM and radius was born.

Yahoo to start testing Mash, a social network site

Yahoo Inc is testing an experimental social network service called Mash that makes it easy for Yahoo users to share tidbits of their lives with friends and family online, the company said on Sunday.

Mash, to which a limited number of public users began being invited as testers on Friday, was described by a spokeswoman as a new, next-generation service that is independent from the company's 2-½ year-old Yahoo 360 degree profile service.

Hangover from "You are the media" Web 2.0 Unconference

It was a mixed experience at the Unconference made possible by Entrepreneur 27 , a group started by university students in Singapore after borrowing the concept which they experienced during their year long stint at Silicon Valley.

I am still recovering from the hangover of the event which actually did not serve alcohol! But the experience of the unconference itself was so alcoholic especially for me when I was amongst those energetic youngsters!!

Desi take on Orkut

www.yaari.com is desi take on Orkut another successful venture. Its a social networking and friendship site for Indians by Indians.

Membership is by invitation only.

Its interesting to see so many online ventures again coming up from India. Once there was boom of such ventures but most of them simply vanished after the dot com burst.

This time it seems like a more carefully planned and controlled approach which have a revenue model already chalked out. Earlier everybody was simply rushing into the things without giving enough thought to business aspects and was going to market with a half made product.
