I have been seeing of late that a lot of projects are being done on .NET.
AJAX (Asynchronous JavaScript and XML) is the hot and happening new web technology - all the really cool sites are using it now, right? It’s all about the user experience, right?
The first of its kind in India, Saltmarch Media's Developer Summit 2008 will provide a high quality summit experience where the most intelligent minds and proactive technology organisations converge to create a high-quality learning experience.
There are so many myths about Java. This month, I'll look at some of the more persistent ones, and try to dispel any doubt.
Fiction :
Applets can read your hard-drive, and delete files
Fact :
Any attempt by an applet to access local files will throw a SecurityException. If uncaught, the applet will crash, but no file access will occur.
The only exception to this rule is for digitally signed applets, which may be granted additional privileges. Your browser will display a dialog box, asking you if you want to accept the identity of the applet author. Choose no if unsure, and you'll always be safe.
The 6.0 release includes significant enhancements and new features, including a completely rewritten editor infrastructure, support for additional languages, new productivity features, and a simplified installation process that allows you to easily install and configure the IDE to meet your exact needs.
Unit testing is a practice that developers use to test their code modules in isolation to make sure that each module does what it's supposed to. JUnit is an Open Source framework which helps in unit testing, specifically coded on the Java platform. Developers just have to determine the test cases and create JUnit tests for their code modules.
In a typical setup, developers don't prefer this added burden of unit-testing on their shoulders, as they feel that this should be done by the testing division. They often overlook the benefits of doing unit-testing at developmental stage, because it requires too much work. This used to make it extremely difficult to convince developers to do unit-testing at their end.
IndicThreads Conference 2007 is just a day away. Here's a look at what's buzzing at the event this year. Spring, RIA, Agile, SOA, Enterprise 2.0, Ajax and JSF are very much present. However the conference also ventures into less chartered territory like embedded and mobile Java, Grids and Java VOIP. Spring is a focus area with over 5 hours of Spring content.
All sessions are 60 to 90 minutes, providing enough time for the presentations as well as Q&A. The conference is the place to meet the key Java community members and where important new innovations will be presented and discussed.
Dates - 26 and 27 Oct 07
Venue - Hinjewadi IT Park, Pune, India
Google Web Toolkit (GWT) Java AJAX Programming by Prabhakar Chaganti is an excellent book for GWT beginners. The language is straightforward and easy to follow.
The book starts with a short introduction to Ajax. It then talks about the steps to follow for getting started with GWT 1.3.3. The first chapter essentially familiarizes you with the GWT extract - the folders and their contents. It also talks about the sample applications that come with the download.
A Sun Microsystems' executive has criticised Apple over its failure to include Java on its popular iPhone device.
"I think it's a mistake. I think it would provide a lot more flexibility in applications being developed," for the iPhone, said Bob Brewin, Sun Distinguished Engineer and vice president for software, at the AJAXWorld conference in California.
JavaScript runs on the phone and someone will put Java on the iPhone, Brewin said. But by not having it now, iPhone users and Java developers are being short-changed, according to Brewin.
Provider of Open Source software solutions and technologies, Lina Software has released the source code for LINA under the GPL v2. LINA enables Linux binaries to run with native look and feel on Windows, Mac, and Linux, without recompiling. This release, along with the launch of community website, www.openlina.org, invites developers around the world to participate in the growth of this technology.
This release of LINA enables Linux command line and server applications to run natively, integrated into the underlying operating system. LINA is a thin virtual layer that enables developers to write and compile source code using ordinary Linux tools. With LINA, this compiled binary can then run on a variety of operating systems. For the user, LINA runs invisibly in the background. These Linux applications now appear as if they were built for that user's operating system.
The operating systems supported in this release include Windows XP, Windows Vista, Windows 2003, Mac OSX, Fedora 7, OpenSUSE 10.2, and Ubuntu 7.04. The LINA library currently supports C++ development. Future releases of LINA will be support applications written in any language native to Linux including C, C++, Python, Ruby, Java, C#/Mono, and more.
“Open source is pivotal to our rapid growth, and it is critical that we engage the worldwide developer community,” said Nile Geisinger, CTO of Lina Software. “We're very interested in developer feedback as we turn our attention to usability.”
