From Compiere to ADempiere?!

It is hard to believe when I hear that the Compiere Community is split and the splinter group has started a project named ADempiere! I would like to see, as neutrally as possible, the impact of this move, by the break away group, for the end users.

If I recollect, it was in 2001 I came across Compiere as an Open Source project and subsequently I began to admire the determination of its founder Jorg Janke to keep the project going in Open Source. It is definitely not easy for a business application like ERP, CRM and SCM to survive in an Open Source fashion like the Linux Kernel or an Operating System bundled with GNU utilities. ERP is 20-30% software and 70- 80% customization and implementation.

Something big is happening

There is now little doubt that the economic boom in India is unprecedented and is reaching well beyond the sectors and areas that normally benefit from these things. These three stories, all of them in today's newspaper, illustrate the point well .

The venture capitalist's Web 2.0 list

Venture capitalists are going nutty over Web 2.0 companies, pouring $870 million into these companies during the first three months of the year, up from $786 million the quarter before, according to a new study by PricewaterhouseCoopers and the National Venture Capital Association.

Here is a list of all Web 2.0 companies that received venture backing. Download the list here; note the tabs at the bottom, which show all 2005 fundings, and then 2006 Q1. Scroll to right to see the funding amounts, etc. (Hat-tip to PwC for sending it on.)

VCs & Their India Investing Strategies

VCs & Their India Investing Strategies - Last November, at IBF’s Investing in India conference, Vinod Khosla noted that India tends to be ten years behind China. “So if you missed the boat on China, you don’t want to miss the boat on India,” said Khosla. You could feel the anxiousness in the room. Since then, VCs have kept a close eye on India, leading to reports of an all too familiar scenario. Too much money chasing too few deals, and a dearth of very early stage funding.
