Gmail get new improved look (web 2.0)

Gmail's New Version Is Now Available

The new version of Gmail

"Google during the recent Analyst Day announced they want to release an updated version of Gmail that's supposed to be faster than the current one, thanks to a JavaScript back-end rewrite," said Google Blogscoped publisher Philipp Lenssen in a blog post. "Also, the new version aims to improve contacts management. 'Gmail 2.0' -- possibly the announced update -- was also mentioned in Google's internal company goals last year, the aim being to achieve '70% user happiness' for that version."

How to block Chat option in Gmail ?

Problem :
I am a network administrator, and need to disable Gmail's chat features on my network.

Solution :
It's sometimes necessary to disable instant messaging services on a network. If you need to prevent Gmail users on your network from chatting, Google suggest blocking DNS lookups to chatenabled.mail.google.com, by returning 127.0.0.1.

If you're not a network administrator, and would simply like to view your own Gmail account without chat features, click standard without chat from the bottom of any Gmail page. You'll be signed out of chat, and your Quick Contacts list will be hidden. To turn chat back on, just click standard with chat.

Google hosted service & SPAM

Since long I was using the mail server provided by my hosting company. Then I heard about hosted services from Google (http://google.com/a).
My mail server was having some problems & I wanted to try hosted services, so I moved my mail service to google.com

Before moving to google, the spam count on my mail server was ZERO (I mean it) & now I can see atleast 5-6 SPAMs daily in my mailbox. I agree that SPAM detection of google is very nice but why SPAM started in the first place, my account was very clean before this.

why some features of gmail are hidden or given to limited users

There are few features in gmail which are being rolled out

like
"Delete all spam messages now" link
"Empty Trash now" link
"Also apply filter to XX conversation below" check box

but its not visible to all the users, its visible in one of my account & not in the other one.

How does google decide who should get this feature first?

Ever wondered you can use GMAIL for your corporate emails?

I started using GMAIL a long back. I was amazed not only due to its cool AJAX features but its other features such as quick search, Email tagging (you dont store emails in folders anymore).

One main feature I liked was to have synchronised with email client. Since I frequently travel or work from home, it is vital to have both synchronised all the time. Most of other providers thought to have POP3 access before , but it could only sync incoming emails, not outgoing.

Gmail offers two way synchronization. So if you are using your outlook to receive and send emails, they both can be synchronised with your gmail account. So you have two copies of emails at any given time (incoming & outgoing both).

I wanted to use this to my advantage, but I did not want to use gmail account as my corporate account. I wanted to keep my current email address vinayak@mycorporatedomain.com all the time. After going through all features of gmail, I figured out how to do it. Today I am going to explain how I did it.

command line saves time

I'm a huge advocate of using command line utilities to automate mundane everyday tasks. One of them which I am forced to do daily is clear my SPAM folder in my gmail account.

I noticed a new version of the Perl CPAN module
Mail::WebMail::Gmail
and I jumped at the opportunity. Just around 15 lines of Perl code, and I can now clear my SPAM folder quickly.

The logic behind gmail

If there was one identifier in your life you would not change, what would it be?

My mom would say, her phone number. I would say, my email address.

email is one of the most important first-mover based businesses, and gmail has come into this market and effectively grabbed a powerful market share in its beta stage itself. How did this happen? How did they make such a first mover based business into their domain? After spending many sleepless nights on this, I have a logic!

First, they came out with a great product. Gmail was nothing like ever seen before. A 1 GB inbox, Ajax based pages which ensured quicker loading, convenient address book and retreival, and so on. This is always the first step for a company that wants to take over a market. Make a great product!
