Open source image gallery

Hi Everyone,
Day to day most of us use royalty free image galleries for web & other print media development.
But royalty free does not mean free images.
Let me clarify, royalty free means you can use those images for intended use without paying ongoing fee. That means company can still charge you one off fee.
Recently one of web design company (who designed our client's web page) used royalty free images without paying to image gallery (Corbis). Image gallery did not waste time and filed legal suit for a huge amount against our client.
After this incident we did not work with that company again. Also we placed a new process to verify every image included in web pages and get exact information about it.
One more thing I would like to point here. Sometime these image galleries have images in free royalty free section and once images are popular, they might move to paid royalty free images. You must keep record of screenshot of the pages while downloading those images. This is essential for your own record.
This is very important especially if your end client is sizeable company (MNC or public sector company).
I am wondering if there are open source image galleries there? Similar to WikiPedia where we can use content freely, we should be able to use images freely?
Thanks to digital camera, everyone of us have a huge collection of images to contribute, we should be able to create such community which would allow sharing and using images as per requirement.

Good thought (from experience)
Hi Vinayak / all
Your idea of having Open Source Image gallery is a good one - and in the coming time something like this will surely come.
http://www.oswd.org/ - This is a website that provides open source web-designs. The only condition to use is give the author credit.

Good information.
Hi Vinayak,
There is already a site called Flickr where there is collabrative photo-sharing. Is that what you were taking about ?
Can you give examples on sites which have paid royalty fee ?
Hi
Hi Raseel,
Images shared on flickr are not intended for use for commercial purpose. If you see a photo on flickr you cannot download and use it in your webpage or printed material. Everyone who uploads images on photo-sharing website continue to hold their copyright. They use photo-sharing website as platform to share images with other friends and family.
Oppose to this, I am talking about a gallery where people upload photos and give away IPR to general public. The images uploaded are uploaded for public use. Then anyone can download and use those images for their personal/commercial use.
Similar to open source content available on wikipedia or open source software available for commercial purpose, images should be shared and freely used/modified in any kind of media free of charge.
Regarding your question about paid royalty free image gallery, visit corbis.com they have royalty free images but you have to pay one off fee for those images.
Regards,
Vinayak
