Open Source Titan, Red Hat buys Qumranet

Red
Hat, the Open source titan, on Friday announced the buyout of
Qumranet, a privately held company behind KVM ( Kernel Virtual
Machine) virtualisation technology for USD 107 million. Besides the
KVM, the buyout will also include Qumranet's SolidICE offering, a
virtual desktop infrastructure (VDI). Red Hat hopes this move will
advance its efforts to transform the virtualization market and drive
comprehensive virtualization technology and management solutions into
every system.

This
also will open doors for Red Hat to be able to offer virtualized
platform to Windows desktop consumers, without really having to pay
for windows.

Qumranet's
KVM and VDI technologies are the next big thing of virtualization.
This acquisition will definately furthur the gap between open source
and proprietary infrastructure software.
