Its CNAME which is created and redirected to specific folder on a server.
www is marely used as prefix nowadays, however it cannot be used against sub-domain in many cases. Ultimately it depends on administrator how they want to configure their network and domains.
If you visit above mentioned examples:
http://www2.nature.nps.gov
and
http://www.nature.nps.gov
They both goto separate server in same locality (or same network).
They both look different as well. It looks like quick fix methodology.
Anyways, who bothers about it!
I always enter ITVidya and use Ctrl+Enter to convert into http://www.ITVidya.com
