3G or 3rd Generaion, is a family of standards for mobile telecommunications defined by the International Telecommunication Union, which includes GSM EDGE, UMTS, and CDMA2000 as well asDECT and WiMAX. Services include wide-area wireless voice telephone, video calls, and wireless data, all in a mobile environment. Compared to 2G and 2.5G services, 3G allows simultaneous use of speech and data services and higher data rates .Thus, 3G networks enable network operators to offer users a wider range of more advanced services while achieving greater network capacity through improved spectral efficiency.

The International Telecommunication Union (ITU) defined the third generation (3G) of mobile telephony standards – IMT-2000 – to facilitate growth, increase bandwidth, and support more diverse applications. For example, GSM (the current most popular cellular phone standard) could deliver not only voice, but also circuit-switched data at download speeds up to 14.4 kbps. But to support mobile multimedia applications, 3G had to deliver packet-switched data with better spectral efficiency, at far greater speeds.

3G was introduced in the United States early in 2002. By late 2004, it was finally providing transmission speeds sufficient to handle full-motion video,

In 2008, India entered into 3G Mobile arena with the launch of 3G enabled Mobile services by Mahanagar Telephone Nigam Limited (MTNL).MTNL is the first Mobile operator in India to launch 3G services.

The GSM and CDMA networks are classed as second generation

Technically, the main difference between 3G and 2G networks is how quickly data can be sent and received. 3G networks can send data up to 40 times the rates of earlier digital networks, which means that in addition to audio, graphics and text, 3G customers can also send and receive video content, in 3G coverage areas.

Upgrading to 3G will be an expensive affair for all telcos.

While everyone is talking about 3G , WiMAX has been somewhat overshadowed by 3G in the media. WiMAX is considered to be 10-30 times faster than 3G ….

The technology has already moved to 4G ,we are still on the verge of distribution of 3G licences that also in 3 months……

Users need to pay an extra fee to use the 3G services, Users need to buy 3G enabled phones to use 3G,

It will be  a far better experience after 3G becomes a reality.
