Fedora 12 Beta Chock Full of Enhancements

Speed is a key issue for all Linux distros, and Fedora is taking an interesting approach by compiling all of its software for i686 with 'special' optimization for Intel Atom. What that means is instead of the typical generic x86 compilation, all apps could potentially run faster. Fedora now does have a specific netbook Moblin graphical interface and a Fedora 12 Moblin Fedora Remix too -- who said Fedora (or Red Hat) wasn't interested in netbooks or the Linux desktop?
Ubuntu Linux Opening Up Cloud Appliance Store

As part of its upcoming Karmic Koala release, Ubuntu Linux is set to integrate a number of new cloud technologies. One of the efforts will include a cloud software appliance store to help expedite setup and deployment of private clouds.At the core of Ubuntu's Karmic Koala cloud technologies is something called the Ubuntu Enterprise Cloud (UEC) which made its initial Ubuntu debut in the Jaunty Jackalope release in April. Full enterprise support services followed several months later.

The recession is proving to be an opportune time for Linux vendor Red Hat (NYSE: RHT) as it continues to grow revenues and earnings. According to Red Hat executives, the growth is coming at the expense of rivals and as a result of customer confidence in the abilities of Linux and Red Hat's JBoss middleware platform.

With RHEL 5.4, Red Hat is now including KVM as the basis for enterprise virtualization, though it is still supporting the Xen hypervisor that debuted with the release of RHEL 5 in 2007.As a result, Red Hat isn't abandoning Xen, but it isn't betting the future of Linux virtualization on it, either.
CentOS Linux developers threaten mutiny

The CentOS project aims to reproduce Red Hat's tested, supported, and certified version of the operating system, without its per-server subscription fees. Because RHEL is open-source software, it's theoretically possible for an outsider to select the same software packages, apply the same patches, and produce a version of the Linux product that works the same.

The policy aims at adopting a single and royalty-free standard for awarding $9 billion e-governance projects, including the national ID project. The draft policy on open source standards for e-governance will guide the multi-billion dollar procurement of IT software and hardware across departments to ensure interoperability among disparate IT systems.
